UPCOMING PUBLIC SEMINAR
GGI is pleased to announce a new offering: Product
Development Metrics Summit, to be held September 27-30,
2005 in Norwood, MA. Note the new date -- Now one week
earlier. Join us for three comprehensive and powerful
metrics seminars - MPDII, PPRD, and PDMP - all presented in
the same week. On Tuesday, zero in on several specific key
metrics subjects of management interest. On Wednesday, improve
your dashboard with metrics that predict outcomes. Finish
the week by creating a set of metrics for R&D in your
company. This set of seminars launches you on the way to improve
your performance through metrics.
The seminars offered are
- Measuring Product Development II (MPDII) - September
27 - This one-day seminar gives you powerful techniques
to measure your product development process. These advanced
techniques and processes cover those areas of product development
that are hardest to measure but deliver the most value by
measuring them, such as loading the product development
pipeline, hurdle rates, tradeoff analysis, and risk and
complexity analysis. Click to view
the abstract for MPDII, or download
the table of contents.
- Proactive and Predictive R&D Metrics (PPRD)
- September 28 - In this one-day seminar you will
understand and create meaningful, forward-looking metrics
for R&D. The seminar helps you move from reactive measures
of past activity to planning, proactive, or predictive measures
that improve the predictability of R&D activities and
projects that lead to bottom-line results. Four metrics
topic areas are covered: planning, proactive, predictive,
and reactive metrics. Click to view
the abstract for PPRD, or download
the table of contents.
- Product Development Metrics Portfolios (PDMP) -
September 29 & 30 - In this one and a half-day
seminar you will learn and use the Linked Metrics Portfolio
(TM) Method, a powerful, step-by-step methodology to a create
linked metrics portfolio. A linked metrics portfolio is
a key tool for managing the R&D organization overall
as well as the projects, functions and improvement initiatives
within R&D. Click to view
the abstract for PDMP, or download
the table of contents.
All seminars feature case studies and examples from a range
of industries and the practical tools you need to implement
metrics in your organization.
Take all three seminars at a discount, or take one or two
seminars according to your needs. Discounts are available
for teams of three or more people attending from the same
company.

MANAGEMENT PRODUCTIVITY
Summarized from "WIPO Publishes Guide on Patents for
Business," WIPO Press Release 2005/254, Geneva, June
28, 2005.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has just
released a useful booklet on patents entitled "Inventing
the Future: An Introduction to Patents for Small and Medium-sized
Enterprises." This publication explains the process of
obtaining and protecting a patent for companies to manage
innovation and thereby advance their strategic business goals.
The guide provides companies with tips on developing a patent
strategy that fits with their business. While the stated focus
is on small and medium-sized firms, we believe that even larger
firms can benefit from the practical information contained
in the guide. This guide is the third in WIPO's series on
Intellectual Property for Business. The first two guides cover
Trademarks ("Making a Mark: An Introduction to Trademarks
for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises") and Design ("Looking
Good: An Introduction to Industrial Design for Small and Medium-sized
Enterprises"). All three guides are available as free
pdf downloads from the WIPO
web site.
Next month, RN will feature more information on resources
for IP valuation.

BOOK REVIEW
Product Lifecycle Management: 21st Century Paradigm for
Product Realization, by John Stark. Springer-Verlag. 2004,
1st edition. 400 pages.
John Stark, publisher of 2PLM ezine, has recently written
a book on product lifecycle management, which we are pleased
to share with you. Stark's book, "Product Lifecycle Management,"
covers all aspects of PLM and how to implement a complete
PLM program in your company. The author defines PLM as "the
activity of managing a company's products all the way across
their lifecycles in the most effective way." Most of
us are well familiar that the product lifecycle begins with
the initial idea, continues through product definition and
development, and extends beyond launch to product support
and finally product end-of-life. PLM helps companies get products
to market faster, provide customers with better support, and
better manage the end of a product's life. PLM provides an
answer to many issues currently faced by product-oriented
companies, such as technology advances, outsourcing, effects
of the Internet, regulatory and environmental concerns, complex
products, and large volumes of data, to name just a few.
This book goes beyond the description of PLM and all of the
problems and drivers that provide a rationale for PLM, and
guides you through the process of creating a vision, mission
and strategy for PLM. Details on implementation of a Product
Data Management (PDM) system are provided, as an essential
enabler of PLM. PDM systems are the primary component of PLM
systems, since they manage all product data and product workflow.
The author takes you through implementation steps as well
as helps you anticipate implementation problems and naysayers.
The book is full of examples of PLM in a variety of companies
in different industries, such as electronics, automotive,
engineering and aerospace. A PDM maturity model shows the
typical progress and benefits a company can expect as it advances
in its PLM implementation. For a comprehensive reference and
hands-on guide for managing your products from cradle to grave,
this is the book to own.
You can find more information about John Stark's latest book
or purchase this book through Amazon.

product cost, or truly leverage platform designs, design reuse
offers many opportunities. In the competitive marketplace,
arriving 6 months late to market can cost you 33% of profits.

and how much of a design to reuse.
Learn the differences between
- Strategic Reuse, and
