MANAGEMENT PRODUCTIVITY -Application Deadline Nears for R&D 100 Award

Condensed from "Small Topic, Big Attention" sidebar in the "Global R&D Report," R&D Magazine, September 2007, page G12.

Applications for the prestigious R&D 100 Award are due by Monday, March 3, 2008, notes R&D Magazine, the award sponsor. Entries are limited to technical products that were first available for purchase or license between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007. Award winners will announced in the magazine's September 2008 issue.

For the past 45 years, the award has given an added "push" to new products entering the marketplace. The winning of an R&D 100 Award is recognized by industry, government, and academia as proof that a product is one of the most innovative of the year.

Application forms are available for downloading on the R&D Magazine Web Site. Forms, along with the entry fee, must be submitted via conventional mail.

MANAGEMENT PRODUCTIVITY - Vital statistics for the U.S.versus the EU

Information for this report drawn from the European Union Web Site, http://europa.eu.

A recent comparison of the United States and the European Union shows that the EU has roughly one-half of the land area of the U.S. but far more people. Just under 500 million people live in the EU, while there are 300 million inhabitants of the United States.

Both the U.S. and the EU are major exporters, but with American's appetite for foreign goods, the United States had a trade deficit in 2005 that was almost six times that of its European counterpart. Additionally, the EU's Gross Domestic Product is about ten percent larger than that of the United States.

Politically, the US has 50 states. The EU has 27 member nations, with additional nations waiting to join the club. Three countries - Croatia, Macedonia, and Turkey - are candidates for European Union membership.

More economic information about the European Union is available on the EU Web Site.

BOOK REVIEW

The Toyota Product Development System, by James M. Morgan and Jeffery K. Liker, Productivity Press, 2006, Copyright 2006 by Productivity Press, a division of The Kraus Organization, ISBN 1-56327-282-2.

Toyota has long been the subject of study for its production and product development practices. But until now, most of what has appeared in print has been a broad outline of the company's methods.

The Toyota Product Development System is divided into five major sections that discuss the integration of people, processes, tools and technology. Through examples and case studies, it illustrates proven practices for dealing with challenges including synchronizing multiple disciplines, multiple function workload leveling, compound process variation, and knowledge management.

We recommend this book to any company that designs and manufactures product, regardless of industry. For more information about The Toyota Product Development System, or to order a copy of the book, go to the Amazon.com Web Site.

Price:  T70h (hard copy) = $192.00, T70c (electronic corporate license) = $240.00, T70sc (electronic corporate/supply chain license) = $360.00.

Description: The paper begins with an overview of advances in product delivery and development from the 1970s through the present. It identifies the importance of setting proper product requirements early in the development cycle and lists key factors that inhibit an organization's ability to do so. The paper reviews key aspects of Quality Function Deployment and "The House of Quality" matrix charts.

T70 provides a case study on a one-year project at Hewlett Packard in which the company identified 10 best practices that helped it achieve its goal of cutting product break-even time in half. It then shifts gears to examine the role of "Lead Users" in new product development. It describes how 3M uses a four-prong technique to identify and work with lead users in its markets.

The technical paper concludes with a list of attributes that allow properly instituted Voice of the Customer techniques to contribute to a company's bottom line.

Table of Contents

  • Evolution Of Work vis-à-vis VOC
  • Quality Function Deployment
  • Product Definition
  • Lead Users
  • Definition Process Maturation
  • Summary
