GGI BIENNIAL SURVEY - Update On GGI's 2008 Primary Research Project

We are quite close to providing all participants in the research with their copy of the results, it will be some time in the next few days.  Over the next few months, we will provide all RN readers with selected extracts of our findings.

Meanwhile, Industry Week heard about this research effort and interviewed our researchers to get some advance "text bytes" of information that are published in the Industry Week May issue.  They are also available on Industry Week's web site.  There are three URLs that comprise the article.

MANAGEMENT PRODUCTIVITY - Better Process Podcast

A call came out of the blue to GGI's office this past month from a gentleman who interviews thought leaders on the subject of improving processes in corporations, records the discussion, and makes it available to the public as a podcast.  The general theme is "issues that small and medium businesses grapple with to compete in an environment that increasingly favors the economies of scale that large companies enjoy."

Brad Goldense was interviewed and two podcasts resulted from the discussion.

Ken Rayment,   "Industry Report - Part I," Better Process Podcast, Podcasternews.com, Ft. Collins, Colorado, USA, WWW Posting April 23, 2008.

Ken Rayment works for a well known Fortune 1000 company in the Manufacturing Engineering discipline in Colorado.  Ken skips lunch most every day and does the "Better Process Podcast," largely as a way of giving something back.  Several companies sponsor his volunteer effort.

MANAGEMENT PRODUCTIVITY - BW 2008 Top 25 Most Innovative Companies

Condensation of "INSIDE INNOVATION:  Smart ideas for tough times, plus the World's 25 Most Innovative Companies," Business Week, April 18, 2008, pages 51-82, published by McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc., 1221 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10020, USA, ISSN 0007-7135.

>From the infocus section by Jena McGregor
- Of the Top 10 Companies, 6 were from the US, 2 were from Japan, 1 was from India, and 1 was from Finland.  Of the Top 25 Companies, 19 were from the US, 3 were from Japan [Toyota, Sony, Honda], 1 was from India [Tata], 1 was from Finland [Nokia], and 1 was from Germany [BMW].

Google and Apple continue to be the top two several years in a row now. Apple has held the top spot for the last two consecutive years. Toyota was third.  GE was fourth.  Microsoft was fifth.  Tata was sixth.

Three of the top nine companies compete in the gaming business.  Microsoft beat Nintendo who was seventh who beat Sony who was ninth.  Social networking site Facebook made the list in the twenty-fifth spot.

Of the Top 25 Companies, 18 were commercial or industrial or high-tech manufacturers, 2 were pure-software [Amazon and Facebook], 2 were retailers [Wal-Mart and Target], 1 was financial services [Goldman Sachs], and 1 was entertainment [Walt Disney].  Note that Sony is also in the entertainment business.

From the indata section by Matt Vella - Collaborative innovation was the major theme of this year's World Economic forum in Davos.  80 percent of corporations currently support group work among white-collar workers.  Of those corporations, 9 percent prefer working in groups of two, 54 percent prefer working in groups of three, 27 percent prefer working in groups of four or more, and 10 percent prefer working alone.  The article also offers interesting statistics on the motivation for collaboration and collaboration frequencies among white-collar workers.
This years rankings were jointly developed by the Business Week Editorial Staff and the Boston Consulting Group.  For more information, please visit the Business Week web site.

MANAGEMENT PRODUCTIVITY - Ocean Tomo's Spring IP Auction Results

We have been keeping RapidNews readers briefed for a couple years now on the emerging market for the sale of intellectual property [IP].  Ocean Tomo is the market leader.  Ocean Tomo is a Chicago-based company that holds several IP auctions each year, in North America and Europe.  These auctions are something analogous to the "eBay of IP," although the proposed seller is not bound to honor any bids including the highest bids unless they agree with the amount offered by the prospective purchaser.  The statistics continue to grow and improve with each auction, more buyers and sellers are getting involved.

Condensed from Ocean Tomo public mailing.

The Spring 2008 North America auction was held April 4 in San Francisco.  A complete summary of the results may be found on Ocean Tomo's web site, at the bottom of the page.  A short summary of the results is:

Cumulative Sales:               $19,629,500
Average Sale Price Per Lot:     $370,368
Highest Selling Lot:            $6,600,000
Transaction Success Rate:       62% [53 of 85 offered lots sold]
Seller Success Rate:            62% [43 of 69 sellers sold lots]

The next Ocean Tomo auction will be June 25-26, 2008 in Amsterdam.

BOOK REVIEW

Diffusion of Innovations, Everett M. Rogers, 5th Edition, The Free Press, August 2003, ISBN-13: 9780743222099.

First published in 1962, this book earned the author his academic reputation for helping to understand why some innovations are adopted, while others are ignored.  Originally written to study innovations in rural agriculture, it has become the standard textbook on diffusion theory for many other fields including new product R&D.
In this edition, the author continues the refinement of the original diffusion model, provides numerous examples of recent new product innovations, addresses organizational innovation, and discusses the ways that the Internet has changed the nature of the innovation process.

According to the author, diffusion refers to "the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system." An Innovation is an idea, practice or object perceived as new by an individual.  The innovation decision is often made through a cost-benefit analysis where uncertainty, consequences, and time are the major obstacles. The author states that the Internet speeds the diffusion process by providing a free and almost instantaneous one to many communications mechanism, and for certain innovations, speeds up the innovation's rate of adoption.
Expanding on earlier concepts in diffusion theory, this author makes the following remarks about organizational innovation and the organization's ability to sustain the innovation after adoption.  Sustainability is more likely if widespread participation has occurred in the innovation process, if re-invention took place, and if an innovation champion was involved.

This book is a must-read for anyone involved with, or curious about innovation.
For more information about Diffusion of Innovations or to order a copy of the book, go through GGI's Bookstore to the Amazon.com Web Site.
